‘Let’s Call It Home’

TYING IN THIS NEXT CHAPTER WITH THE LAST

My aim for Let’sCall It Home was to try and answer the questions asked in “So, What Next?” - my last EP - and set up the listener with all the themes of the album. I’m so proud of this song, and am so excited for the rest of the album to follow.

‘Dungarees II’

a song exploring wanderlust

Released on Friday 17th September as the third single from my album ‘Falling or Rising’, this song explores the idea of wanting to run away and travel, with the cosy (and perhaps light academia) themes of warmth and comfort in the unknown.

‘When Will I Meet You?’ - Available Now

My brand new single, and the second from my upcoming album, is available now. I’m so so proud of this song, with it’s soft mellow indie vibes, and the harmonies that Caolan wrote. I’m actually obsessed. I hope you love it as much as I do.

Her voice is frankly incredible – at times she’s folk-ish, at times pop-ish. Her voice is compelling.

On 2nd November, my new single ‘dungarees’ was released into the world. I wrote dungarees about finding comfort and home, and how to me that’s one of the most important things.

The song begins with this idea of having someone and not wanting to let them go, and as cheesy as it sounds, feeling so whole, that you never want to let them go. Then we come to the chorus, and the idea of being so happy and comforted builds up to reference the dungarees (which I live in, in their various colours and styles). The hook of the song is “I’ll wear your smile every day, like a pair of dungarees, I am home. Because to me, there’s nothing like finding comfort in joy. And that can come from anywhere, from an amazing fiance to the best and most comfortable pair of dungarees you can own.

I always smile when I think of the second verse, which I think you can hear in the final recording too. My fiance was never a dog person, but now he adores Lily. She jumps up at him when he comes home (which I know she shouldn’t), but he always smiles and picks her up when he comes home, and it’s just that simple thing that I love so much, I’m so glad made it into the final song.

And then before we go into the big ending of the song, there’s one more verse which I’m so proud of. A while ago I read ‘The Place I’ve Cried in Public’ by Holly Bourne, and there’s a line in that book that goes ‘I’d chosen being whisked off my feet rather than the steady ground beneath them’. And that line is really what made me want to write this song. I think so much of the time, we value things that will only make us happy short term, we go for danger or exhilaration. I wanted to spin this quote from this book around and turn it into something tying back into this idea of comfort and so I ended on: ‘and though each day may feel the same, I don’t want to be swept away, I want to feel the ground beneath my feet’.

In case you can’t tell, to me this song is all about finding happiness in comfort in so many areas of life; friendships, relationships or what we wear. And that doesn’t mean we have to stop having adventures, it just means we have someone to do it with and a great pair of dungarees to have them in.

‘So, What Next?’ is a commentary on my experiences over the last few years of ‘growing up’ and be expected to do absolutely everything. These are some of the most personal songs I’ve ever written, they just poured out of me.

so-what-next

On Tuesday 1st October 2019, musician Alice Ashcroft released a new type of song which demonstrates her growth as a female Indie artist. Experimenting with new sounds and an unfamiliar time signature, the deep synths and catchy pop beats are combined with mandolins and bassy strings in a folky instrumental section in a wonderful fusion of genres.

The atmospheric intro captures your attention straight away, which then effortlessly shifts into a more poppy verse and chorus, keeping listeners on their toes without catching them off guard.

Compared to previously released music, this new song is definitely more progressive, and is the perfect example of Alice’s versatility as a singer-songwriter. The seamless transitions in and out of 5/4 pay homage to this, and give the song a refreshing, edgy sound. The lyrics are easily relatable and sassy whilst remaining appropriately poetic.

With a chorus enriched with vocal harmonies, Alice has also been experimental with different textures in her music, combining a variety of different timbres to make a rich overall sound. Taking inspiration from a range of contemporary artists, including Maisie Peters, dodie, and Oh Wonder, she has incorporated styles from their music and adapted them to make her own sound fresh and unique.

‘I Won’t Think About This’ is the perfect song to accompany autumnal evenings spent alone or with friends to give an ambience with chilled-out vibes.

I’ve released 4 EPs, and my debut album. Available on all good streaming services!
